Charles’ Judgment of His Students (English Version)
Upon his victorious return from Gaul, Charles summoned the students he had entrusted to Clement and asked to see their prose and poetry compositions. Those from lower or middle classes exceeded all expectations, presenting works adorned with literary refinements. In contrast, the noble students presented works filled with nonsense.
Charles, emulating the justice of the Eternal Judge, placed those who had done well on his right and said to them: “I thank you, my children, for your diligence in both your own benefit and in fulfilling my orders. Now strive to reach perfection, and I will grant you excellent bishoprics and monasteries, and you will always be held in honor in my eyes.”
Then, turning to those on his left with great irritation, and with a fiery gaze that shook their consciences, he thundered: “You nobles, you sons of important figures, who rely on your nobility and wealth, neglecting my orders and your own glory, have devoted yourselves to luxury, amusements, and trivial activities.”
With that, Charles made his customary oath, face and hand raised to the sky: “By God, King of Heaven! I care nothing for your nobility and appearance, even if others admire you. Know without any doubt that if you do not make up for your past negligence with diligent study, you will never receive any benefit from Charles.”
